The North Yorkshire market town of Skipton, properly known as Skipton-in-Craven, lies on the River Aire. Historically the town has been part of the West Riding of Yorkshire and is situated some 16 miles north west of Bradford and under 40 miles from the important racing city of York. Skipton held its own races between 1805 and 1808 but then racing lapsed. A later meeting, billed as the Craven Meeting, was held on Friday 28th March 1845.
